Five tips for more accurate tile estimation.

Waste factors, wall-vs-floor pricing, and the add-ons that protect your margins on every bid.

By Jacob Muzychenko

Getting tile estimates right is crucial for profitability. Here are five practical tips that experienced estimators use to create more accurate bids.

1. Always Account for Waste

Industry standard waste factors range from 10-15% for straightforward layouts to 20%+ for diagonal patterns or complex cuts. In Cedrus, you can set per-room waste factors so each space reflects its actual complexity.

2. Measure Walls Separately from Floors

A common mistake is treating wall tile the same as floor tile in your pricing. Wall installations typically have different labor rates, require different prep work (backerboard vs. underlayment), and may use different tile sizes. Break out walls, floors, showers, and backsplashes as separate categories.

3. Don't Forget the Add-Ons

Waterproofing membranes, Schluter trim, heat wire, shower drains, and niches all add cost. Itemize these in your estimate rather than bundling them into a general allowance. This protects your margins and gives clients transparent pricing.

4. Account for Deductions

Windows, doorways, cabinets, and fixtures reduce the actual tiled area. Subtracting deductions from your measurements prevents over-ordering materials and keeps your estimates competitive.

5. Use Assembly-Based Pricing

Instead of pricing individual materials and labor separately for each bid, create standard assemblies (e.g., "floor tile installation" includes underlayment, thinset, tile, and grout at a per-sqft rate). This speeds up estimation and ensures consistency across projects.
